This is a story that seemed to capture so many people, including our ORIGINAL facebook page!
This prompted me to search for petitions to try to help Cliff out, even if we had to create a new petition! While it was not our original petition, we ended up pushing the original petition to the point that prompted Rhode Island officials to reconsider the ordeal! Here are a few links that bring the story to life! http://www.providencejournal.com/news/20160930/happy-ending-story-of-cliff-coyote-in-state-of-uncertainty http://whatsupnewp.com/10000-sign-petition-save-cliff-coyote-killed/ http://www.thenewportbuzz.com/councilman-florez-secures-death-sentence-reprieve-for-cliff-the-coyote/10069 http://patch.com/rhode-island/newport/cliff-coyote-captured-taken-secure-location And this is the petition by Nicole Ingham and assisted by care2 petitions that we helped put it over the top! http://www.thepetitionsite.com/335/278/545/stop-coyote-from-being-euthanized/ Here is some of the communications between myself and several Middletown RI officials including a phone call from the Governor's office: MYSELF: (Sept 23) Why must Cliff be euthanized because of a few humans who didn't know any better? There has to be a better solution! There are many sanctuaries who would gladly take him! There is no need to destroy him to when there are other options available! Please reconsider using lethal actions! Why make matters worse when there is absolutely NO need to do so! Sincerely, Douglas Lopes Chief A: (Sept 23) Mr. Lopes. Cliff is not going to be uthanized. He is going to be captured and placed in a zoo which displays coyotes. That decision was made last night and announced today. Respectfully, Chief MYSELF: (Sept 26) Who would you recommend me to so we can inquire how Cliff is doing, and keep tabs on him? Chief A: (Sept 26) Dr. Numi Mitchell of the Conservation Agency [email protected] Respectfully, Chief MYSELF: (Sept 26)To Numi Mitchell: Hello - my name is Douglas Lopes. I run a HUGE wolf advocate page on facebook, and we recently took a serious stand for Cliff to NOT be euthanized. This included emails, petitions, phone calls - I have been in contact with almost ALL parties involved and have just a simple question - my advocacy fell in love with Cliff from the start, and I would just like to get an update on his situation and how he is doing so I can inform over 108,000 supporters to my facebook page www.facebook.com/xftlowx Thank you! Sincerely, Douglas W. Lopes Numi: (Sept 27) Hi Douglas - thanks for the query. I put a small update on our Facebook page if you would like to share (Facebook.com/coyotestudy). He was ok as of 6 this morning and we are working hard for a good outcome for him and good lessons for our community. Don’t feed! Best, Numi Numi Mitchell, Ph.D. The Conservation Agency 67 Howland Avenue Jamestown, RI 02835 [email protected] Desk: (401) 423 0866, Mobile: (401) 835 1400 http://www.theconservationagency.org/coyote MYSELF: (Sept 27) Thank you so much - and all our best for Cliff! Is it ok if I check in with you next week? Numi: (Sept 29) Sure but I do have some news. As of two days ago our Department of Environmental Management (DEM) has taken charge of the Cliff rescue operation. NBCS has been asked to assist in helping them capture him safely. Middletown and Newport Police are also helping with the effort. DEM will ultimately decide where he is relocated. Dr. Scott Marshall, State Vet, told me they will be assigning an information officer to be the point of contact (and it may be Scott). Everyone is working towards the best possible outcome for Cliff. Paws crossed! Best, Numi MYSELF: (Oct 6) How is Cliff? Heard rumor he was finally captured, and collar was removed and he is now roaming free? Thought he was going to a zoo that features coyotes? Please clarify! Numi: (Oct 7) http://theconservationagency.org/cliff-coyote-postscript-numi/ Hi Douglas - that is the whole scoop. I just finished posting it. Best possible outcome I think. Best, Numi MYSELF: (Oct 7) This is a bad decision in my point of view! All you did was take him from 1 area and move him to another - it doesn't help his situation at all, in fact all it does is set him up to become someone else's problem. There are plenty of sanctuaries nationwide that would take him! Although I am grateful he was spared - I am NOT satisfied with your "solution"! Numi (Oct 8): Good morning Douglas, relocation to western Rhode Island was DEM's decision. They were in control. No one else is authorized to move a live coyote anywhere without their permission. NBCS was asked to help them capture him. We did that carefully and he was unharmed. That makes me very happy. I am crossing my fingers for one of the sweetest coyotes I have ever known. That is the only thing I can do. Best, Numi Numi Mitchell (401) 835-1400 HOWEVER,I am NOT happy with the eventual outcome and here is why: Imagine that, the relocation to western Rhode Island was all RI Department Of Environmental Management's decision. Apparently no one else is authorized to move a live coyote anywhere without your permission? So you had to go and get involved, and took control, stating that supposedly he would not be able to adapt to captivity! I call flat out bullshit! There are PLENTY of sanctuaries that want coyotes! I do not believe you even attempted anything and even tho it's too late now to make a difference, I still want to know why, and I plan on doing what I can to find out more info. In my opinion, all you have done is set Cliff up to become another problem somewhere else because he is too dependent on humans for food now, and not afraid of humans either because of that! Is that how you work? I have learned an awful lot about advocating over the years as a wolf advocate – including respect for the advocates themselves! A person can’t help but become passionate about wild animals and show compassion for ALL wildlife! But it takes more than just words on a screen, to be a true advocate! This is not to say it HAS to take money! There are so many free things you can do to become an advocate and help wildlife. All it takes is dedication and devotion to wolves!
For instance, you can use the power of online petitions to spread the word about a worthy cause! There are so many to chose from, or if you feel creative, you can always create your own! There are numerous sites that make it easy for you to do just that! First pick your battle, and research it as much as possible! Be sure to know who/what can make this happen and target them in the petition! Gather as many facts about it, and make notes of what you intend to do with it, and how your cause can be supported! Consider what methods can help the most! How to create a petition via care2: Log in http://www.thepetitionsite.com/ Step 1 – basic petition information including person/agency you are petitioning – it is helpful if you can enter the known name and/or email address etc but most times they will take care of that for you Step 2 – choose a photo for petition – under 1mb – or leave empty and they will use a generic photo, also you can edit ANY info at this point, and can make up a thank you note that gets sent out automatically when someone signs petition, and then you can write the full letter about the petition as well Step 3 – post and share Step 4 – making updates or closing the petition – follow instructions BUT MOST OF ALL - Get involved!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Another similar thing to do is use email campaigns to stand up for your cause, or just create your own email campaign. The magic of this is you can do it the way YOU want to! I suggest using RAW feelings rather than numeric facts to get your point across! Once you create your own masterpiece, you can have other friends share the same email to the same people – it works just like a petition! You can also go 1 step further with this. (See Below!) How to write an Letter To The Editor or create an email campaign: Source – https://wolvesofdouglascountywisconsin.com/ Search… Submit Home About YOU ARE HERE: HOME » HOW TO WRITE A LETTER TO THE EDITOR How to write a letter to the editor A letter to the editor is one way to keep your social cause, in this case wolf advocacy, in the public eye through your local newspaper. Every newspaper has a section for opinion editorials or letters to the editor, read as many letters to the editor until you feel comfortable and then get to work on writing one of your own letters. Find an opinion editorial you want to respond to. The following is a recent article to read as an example for a response; Causes unclear as wolves kill a record number of hunting hounds (copy and paste that title in a Google search bar) and read it. Look for main points that you want to respond to in your letter to the editor. The following are examples of the points in the article, “Causes unclear as wolves kill a record number of hunting hounds.” Main topic; The state’s wolf population has grown while regulation of hunting dogs has been relaxed, but it’s not clear what factored into the increased dog deaths, said DNR large carnivore specialist David MacFarland. Supports main topic; “It’s too early to say what’s causing it, or if it’s really a significant difference or not,” MacFarland said. “It could be just one pack being more aggressive than in the past.” Supports main topic; And while state law was changed in 2015 to end a license requirement for the summer dog training season, it’s not known if more dogs are being run, he said. Supports main topic; The bait also draws wolves that will defend the sites, leading to conflicts with hunting dogs released in those places to pick up bear scent, … Supports main topic; The wolf population estimate this year is the highest yet for the endangered species, but little growth has occurred in northern areas where almost all of the dogs were killed, MacFarland said. Summary of main topic and supporting points; Still, compared to the small army of men and woman who hunt deer each year, the number of bear hunters using dogs is small, at least in part because of the expense of purchasing, training and feeding the dogs, he said. The use of dogs for hunting is controversial on several levels. In 2014 a state appeals court ruled that hunters can train dogs to chase down wolves, rejecting arguments from humane societies… Now get to work on writing your letter… Read the article, then write a response that supports why you agree or disagree. Letters are no more than 250 words, spelling and grammar count. Use a grammar & spell checker or have a friend read your letter over to catch any errors. Stick to your main topic, and support that topic in your response. Example; I’m writing a response to the article, “Causes unclear as wolves kill a record number of hunting hounds.” By (add the author and date) I disagree with the statement that, it’s not clear what factored into the increased dog deaths. It’s obvious to me that bear hounders are causing the deaths of these dogs….now add your points to support your main topic…as to why…give examples…over baiting…too many dogs being run…no regulation… Main point/thesis statement Support it/body of letter Summarize/conclusion Summarize, repeat your main point and state what your solution could be…dogs are dying because of all the baiting of bear that attracts wolves…limit baiting…or dogs are dying because of all the dogs running thru…limit training…regulate it… Write at least two drafts of your letter, it’s alright to re write, edit and write a final draft. Submit your letter to the paper. Every paper has directions on how to send your letter. Always sign it and put what town you live in. They won’t accept your letter without a signature or address (they won’t publish your full address, just your town or city and state) Stick to your main point, support it, and summarize….edit for errors, re read it…submit it… Again - Get involved! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You can take the email you created and print it off, or even start from scratch and write up a letter to mail to whom ever you feel is appropriate! Write in legible hand writing and send in a standard business envelope! If you desire a reply – be sure to include your contact info, but if you are sending this to a government agency, you might want to re-think that part! There are rallies held for wolves and/or wildlife and/or their habitats all over – and MOST are free to attend! You can get a list of phone numbers that you can use to contact your local congressmen (women), senators and any other officials you feel fit the situation negatively or positively! NOTE: WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU USE RAW FEELINGS AND HARSH LANGUAGE BUT ALSO AVOID CURSING OR MOST LIKELY YOU WON’T BE TAKEN SERIOUS! ATTENTION USFWS:
what we want: No more collaring wolves, no more gassing wolf dens especially with pups within, no more aerial hunting wolves, no more trapping of any animals, no more denning wolves or using a Judas wolf to hunt wolves, no more using hounds to hunt predators, no more negatively exploiting wolves, maintain, re establish or create buffer zone in parks, use of PROVEN COST EFFECTIVE NON LETHAL methods to control predators as opposed to lethal methods, the cessation of the destruction of wild life habitats, more justice for wildlife crime and better follow through instead of turning your backs on it, and Dan Ashe removed from office - just to name a few things! If you value wildlife, then join our fight against the corrupt people and agencies trying to strip them of their protection again! Besides, why would we want anybody who is against wildlife rights to be in office of an agency that is responsible for their well being anyway? ATTENTION TO OUR CORRUPT GOVERNMENT: It is not acceptable that our wildlife is always the first to suffer or be blamed because of human errors or failures, whether intentionally done or by accident and it's time to stand up and fight for our wildlife so they can live as they were meant to, in peace with itself! Instead of blaming wildlife or attacking wildlife, we should be blaming ourselves for letting our wildlife down and leaving it to suffer because of our own stupidity! This is the ORIGINAL email:
Dear Dr. Tuggle, This email is in regards to a petition I initiated a few months ago in an attempt to get Guardian M1396 released back to his mate and pups! There are over 74,000 signatures on it as we speak! It has been featured on several news broadcasts within the Albuquerque, New Mexico area. Please find the url link to the petition itself and the url to the pdf containing the signatures at the bottom! U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has trapped and removed Guardian, the alpha male of a Mexican wolf pack that lives in Gila National Forest. Without his support and leadership, the survival of his pack is in jeopardy. Douglas, a Care2 member and wolf supporter, was so outraged by the actions of USFWS that he started this petition to release Guardian. There are fewer than 100 Mexican wolves living in the wild in Arizona and New Mexico, and the federal reintroduction program to rebuild their population was just starting to show progress. If this pack doesn’t survive, it will be a significant blow to the overall population. The reason Guardian was trapped was because he killed livestock to feed his hungry pups and pack. Now his pack is severely threatened. Ranchers and the federal government hunted the Mexican wolf to oblivion decades ago — which is why this reintroduction program is desperately needed. Ranchers are paid for any livestock that are killed by wolves. Additionally, recent research shows removing alpha animals to reduce livestock depredation might not even lead to fewer dead sheep or cattle. It’s time for the public to speak up for healthy ecosystems and healthy wolfpopulations. If enough of us take action, USFWS will have to respond. Sign Douglas’ petition and urge the USFWS to run the reintroduction program according to science, and not the wishes of ranchers: Let Guardian run free! Thank you for acting for wildlife, GUARDIAN THE NEW MEXICAN MEXICAN WOLF After Feds Trap Endangered Alpha Wolf, Over 56k Sign Care2 Petition for His Release *** http://www.thepetitionsite.com/828/364/049/ *** A Care2 Petition is Pushing Back on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for Placing the Alpha Male, Named Guardian, Into Captivity SILVER CITY, NEW MEXICO — A Care2 petition is urging the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to return Guardian, or Wolf M1396, back to his home in the wild after the federal agency captured the endangered Mexican gray wolf, an alpha male, and placed him in captivity. The petition has gathered over 74,000 signatures. VIEW THE CARE2 PETITION HERE: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/828/364/049/ The federal government orderedGuardian to be captured after he killed livestock, but Care2 petition author Douglas Lopes says that because the animal is an alpha male, his removal threatens the entire pack — and potentially, the entire species’ recovery. “Guardian is just the latest example of how the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service prioritizes the will of ranchers over the needs of wolves,” Lopes told Care2. “Spending taxpayer funds to eradicate wolves is shameful.” According to the FWS, there were 110 wild wolves counted in Arizona and New Mexico at the end of 2014. At the end of 2015, that number had dropped to 97. “The [U.S. government’s] reintroduction program is an important step to right this wrong, but only if wolves are allowed to live freely across wild federal lands of the Southeast,” Lopes said. “Guardian needs to be returned to his pack. Without their alpha, the Luna group is at risk.” Three wolves have already died this year, including two accidentally killed by government traps, according to the Center for Biological Diversity.
